Mallee Rover Crew's 33rd Mallee Rover Scout Activity Camp

DCP_0007

The 33rd Mallee Rover Scout Activity Camp (Mud Camp) is just around the corner. It will be taking place on November 6, 7 and 8, 2009 and will again be held at Tapio Station.

Get organised and download the Scout Info Pack here.

The Rovers put a huge amount of organisation into this camp, and as such require to know the exact number of Scouts attending the camp well in advance. To reserve your place at this camp, the Rovers require full payment from the Troop by October 19. This means that if you intend to take part in this camp we need to receive your payment of $35.00 plus your completed Health Form this Wednesday night (or the week after at the absolute latest), so the Troop can make payment to the Rovers by October 19. The Rovers will not accept any late payments.

This camp, which is is fully catered, costs $35.00.

If you haven't been to this camp, check out the photos of the 2007 and 2008 mud camps.

Survivor Camp

Preparation for AJ2010
Next weekend's camp was originally planned to be a 4 night camp for Scouts attending Jamboree, as each Scout requires a minimum of 4 consecutive nights under canvas and a minimum of 10 nights in total. However, due to work commitments of the leaders, we have decided to reduce this camp to a 2 night, weekend camp.

At this camp, each patrol will camp separately. Each patrol will set up their own camp and cater for themselves.

This camp will also be an excellent opportunity to get some badge work done.

Location of Activity: Steve's Bend - Trentham Cliffs, NSW.

Dates of Activity: 6pm on Friday, September 18th to 2pm on Sunday, September 20th.

Cost: $NIL. Each Scout to contribute food to patrol for catering.

Transport Arrangements:

To Camp: Car Pooling, meet at hall on Friday night at 6pm for departure by 6:30pm. Scouts to arrange car pooling on Wendesday night.

From Camp:
2pm Sunday. The campsite must be completely packed up and clean before any Scouts can leave.

Uniform: Scouts need to wear their scarves when travelling to and from the activity.

Catering: Self catered. Arrange with your patrol.

All gear must be clearly marked with the owner's name. No responsibility will be taken for any lost property.

Scrapheap Challenge in the Sunraysia Daily

BY JONO PECH
7/09/2009 4:00:00 AM

SUNRAYSIA scouts were well prepared for the Tour of the Murray River Scrapheap Challenge yesterday.

The scouts raced their masses of welded and assembled junkyard parts in a fun relay leading up to the Tour of the Murray River’s final stage.

Each scout team of five constructed a bike from scrap parts found at Aroundagain, with the resultant contraptions requiring at least five wheels and brakes.

A first lap was raced with one pedaler, with another joining for each of the five laps until every team member was pedaling the bike.

As well as the Scrapheap Challenge, leading up to the tour’s Mildura stage the Coomealla Cycling Club ran a non-elite bike race, and a fun run/walk was held to raise money for the Cancer Resource Centre.

Eddie Warhurst, Tour of the Murray River steering committee chairman, said the tour had been very successful overall and had a fitting ending in Mildura.

“The Scrapheap Challenge showed it was more than just a bike race and there was a real potential for community based activities,” Mr Warhurst said.

“It certainly captured the imagination of the SBS film crew.

5th MILDURA SCOUTS NEEDS YOUR HELP

No.1 - Bunnings BBQ.

5th Mildura Scouts have a Bunnings BBQ on Sunday, 6th September. This is unfortunately on the same day and at the same time as the Scrapheap Challenge. (We promise to take lots of photos and video so you don’t miss out).

This is an excellent fundraiser, but we need some help to run it. Please let one of the leaders know if you can spare an hour or two, or email me at 5thmildura@gmail.com.

The BBQ starts at 9am and finishes by 3pm.

So far, we have only one family that has volunteered to help, but they can’t do it alone!

No.2 - Scrapheap Challenge Construction.

Parents With Technical Skills Needed.
·Welding (essential)
·Metalwork, etc.

Scrapheap Challenge - Construction Day No.1.
·Meet at Roundagain at 10am on Saturday 22nd August. (This Saturday!)
·Discuss what we are going to build. Have a plan for the following weekend.
·Ideally we would like to have 2 entries. This would involve repairing and modifying last years “bike” plus making a new “bike” as there are almost 30 Scouts and only 5 seats per “bike”. Realistically we would be happy to have one functional “bike”.

Scrapheap Challenge - Construction Day No.2.
·Meet in Nigel’s workshop at Riverland Forklifts shed at say 2pm on Saturday 29th of August. (Nigel to confirm that this is OK).
·Everything needs to be completed on this day. Some time on the following Saturday (5th September), the day before the race, may also be required.
Scrapheap Challenge - Race Day.
·9:45am to 12pm on Sunday 6th September.
·Meet at K-Mark Carpark (at rear).
·Helmets must be worn.
·Full uniform.

Grampians Hike - What Will We Be Doing?

The Grampians Hike Camp from the 5th to the 8th of June will likely unfold as follows. (The details are yet to be confirmed. This is intended to help you understand the trip and what we might be doing).

Friday 5/6/09:
Meet at 7:30pm on Twelfth Street at the site of the old 2nd Mildura Scout Hall (now vacant land) between No.1 & No.2 Ovals (between San Mateo & Etiwanda Ave).
Depart Mildura at 8:00pm.
Arrive Grampians at approximately midnight.
Set up camp and get to bed by 1:00am.

Saturday 6/6/09:
(Breakfast). Day Hike (CFA ration pack for lunch). Return to camp. (Dinner).

Sunday 7/6/09:
(Breakfast). Hike. (CFA ration pack for lunch). Hike. (Dinner).

Monday 8/6/09:
(Breakfast). Morning in Halls Gap. (Pack own lunch, or buy lunch).
Depart Halls Gap
Arrive Mildura approximately 6:00pm
Parents will be contacted by phone / SMS to confirm time of arrival.

The hikes will generally keep to the tourist tracks. We will NOT be hiking for 3 days carrying all our gear. (Don't worry).

The Scouts will only need to carry their own snacks, water bottle and lunch. This will be a self-catered trip, so you will need to pack main meals for each day. Later in the term (about 10 days before the trip) we will work out menus to help you go shopping. Everything needs to be fairly small and light-weight as it all must be contained in your pack / bag. This is because everyone's gear, food, etc. must fit in the luggage space under the bus.

As for gear, you will need reasonable hiking shoes, boots or sandshoes, wet weather gear, warm clothing, hat, etc. Later in the term we will go through a list of things to pack for this camp.

Meals for each Scout to provide:
Breakfast x 3
Lunch. 2 x CFA ration packs provided (THANKS CFA!!) (You provide or buy lunch in Halls Gap on Monday).
Dinner x 1, + Pizza Night.
Snacks for travelling & hiking.

Remember, if you want to take part in this camping trip, payment of $55 is required by Friday 17th April. Payment can be made at John's office, above Hudaks Bakery at 135c Eighth St, before 5:30pm this Friday. (The deadline is early so we can make a commitment to book one or two buses).

Grampians Hike 2009

With Raft Race come and gone, its now time to get ready for our next big camp... The District Hike. This year the leaders of the district thought we’d do something different, so we’re packing up and heading to the Grampians for the long weekend in June. It was last done back in 2002, and it was a huge success, so it was thought that it was about time that we did it again. We will only be doing day hikes, so you won’t have to lug all your stuff all over the Grampians. This will be a great opportunity for those who need your nights under canvas for the Jamboree, and may also count for your hike for the Red Cord.

Dates: 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th of June (Queens Birthday Weekend)
Cost: $55 which includes the bus trip and a much needed shower on the Sunday. It does not include food, you will need to bring your own HIKING food (no steaks!!)

As seats on the bus are limited, we will need to know who definitely wants to go, and your money by Friday 17th April. We don’t have any Scout nights before then, so you will have to drop in and see John at his office (above Hudaks Bakery on Eighth Street). It’s first in best dressed for the bus, and we wouldn’t want to miss out on this excellent opportunity. When we have definite numbers, more notes will be handed out going over where we would be staying and exactly what you would need to bring. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. Email me jaimie_rodd@hotmail.com or call me 0439015504.

Apologies for the late notice.

Ski Race Fundraiser

Mildura Ski Club have given us the opportunity to make some cash! We have been offered the job of gate keeping and car parking. They will pay $1000 for our services. But it is Saturday & Sunday mornings. I need to know tonight, don't feel bad about saying no either. This is an adult job, but having the Scouts there would also be awesome exposure for Scouting! Let me know please.
Steven Scout Leader

UPDATE: We have decided not to do this fundraiser.

Raft Regatta - Reminder

Don't forget your life jacket (if you have one), wide brimmed hat,
fully enclosed shoes (old sand shoes which won't come off) not 'Crocs' or sandals, water bottle and a portable lunch for Saturday.

Looking at the weather forecast, it shouldn't be a total fire ban, so cooking should be allowed, but remember to have a backup plan!

It looks like we might get some rain over the weekend and the nights
may be cold. Make sure your tent is waterproof, you have a spray
jacket, and something warm to wear in the evenings.

See you at the hall before 6pm on Friday. We are hoping to be leaving the hall at 6pm. We will then be heading out to Bunnings carpark where we will meet up with Steve and his big trailer. We will then head out to Buxton's Bend together.
