To the Sunraysia Scouting Community,

We are going to have a very important visitor to Sunraysia on the 26th November. Michael Baden-Powell, the grandson of Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, is coming to Mildura to visit the local Scouting community and to give a small presentation on the history of Scouting. We really need to show some support for this, as we ARE Scouts and this is as close to the Founder as any of us will get!

Who is he? Robert Baden-Powell (BP) is the founder of Scouting, Michael is his grandson.
When: Friday 26th November 2010
Time: 7:30pm
Where: Nichols Point Scout Hall
Uniforms please.

Michael is giving a presentation on the history of Scouting, and we would love to have a big turnout for this. Especially the Rovers, this is Scouting, and you are part of it! Hope to see you all there.

Event information can be downloaded here.

Download a sample of a 1911-1914 American Scout Handbook, just have a read of what Scouts were expected to do, especially the blacksmithing!

Working Bee :: Saturday 2 October, 10:30am to 2pm

Hello everyone,

Enjoying the holidays?

The hall is in desperate need of a working bee. The grass is getting long and the hall needs a good clean.

We would like to see a start at 10:30am, have a BBQ lunch (Scouts will provide the meat, bbq & bread)
Then work on a little further, until maybe 2pm, depending on weather.

We need some parents who have lawn mowers and edgers. And maybe some parents who are good at making things look tidy.

I will be there from 10am, and my will be aim to clean out the store room, remove the 2 old copiers and put in a nice (working) little copier. I will have my ute and trailer there to remove rubbish.

Please reply to me either through email at 5thmildura@gmail.com

I would like to hear from every 5th Mildura Family. We are all in this together, without help, they Group will struggle to function. We have an awesome hall, it just needs some love.

Thanks
Steven Munro - Scout Leader

PS Scouts & Youth are welcome to come and help, remember old clothing too, hat, water bottle, gloves.

Bunnings BBQs :: Thank You & We Need Your Help Again (Sun 12 Sept)

Thank you to those families who were able to assist at the BBQ on Saturday at Bunnings. We had a very successful fundraiser having to restock our supplies by 12 O’clock, finally selling out of everything by 2pm.

I will let families know the amount that was raised through this fun event. Once again thank you to those families and the leaders who assisted on the day and thank you also to the families who were unable to attend this time and let us know. I understand that it is not always possible to help out due to other commitments.

We will be running our last BBQ at Bunnings for this year on Sunday September 12th from 9am.

Once again I am asking families to help out at this fundraiser as all money raised goes to assisting our children in either Scouts or Venturers.

Whilst this is the Sunday of the Cohen Shield Weekend, families who have a child at the Cohen Shield Camp could still help out in the morning as pick up is not until after lunch. Looking forward to hearing from you in regards to helping out for an hour or two at this fundraiser. A note asking you to nominate a time will go home with your child this week at either Scouts or Venturers.

Thanks and have a good week.

Digging in for tree day in Mildura :: Sunraysia Daily 2/8/10

SUNRAYSIA scouts yesterday banded together and worked their green-thumbs in a huge tree planting effort.

More than 60 scouts, cubs, joeys, venturers, rovers, and parents met to plant 300 trees behind the Red Cliffs Scout Hall as part of National Tree Day.

About 400 native trees and shrubs were also planted in Mildura to rehabilitate and beautify the channel reserve connecting the new marina and the Etiwanda Wetlands.

The Sunraysia scouts were just some of the hundreds of thousands of volunteers planting trees around the country.

National Tree Day is Australia’s largest community tree planting event and is responsible for planting more than 15 million native trees and shrubs over the past 15 years.

Marcus Blount crew leader Jaimie Rodd said the group had planted twice as many trees in Red Cliffs as last year.

“Scouts care for the environment and it’s also good to get out and do something in uniform to show we’re active in the community,” he said.

Murray Venturer Unit - Recommencing Thursday 29th July, 7:30 to 9:30pm

The 5th Mildura Scout Group's Venturer Unit, known as the 'Murray Venturer Unit' will recommence meeting at the 5th Mildura Scout Hall from next Thursday night from 7:30 to 9:30pm. We will meet every Thursday night during school term.

We have chosen to meet on Thursday nights from 7:30 to 9:30pm so that we can meet with other Venturer Units and have joint nights on occasion.

Max will be leading the Venturer Unit and Donna Munro (Queen's Scout) and I have offered to be assistant leaders. (I will remain as an Assistant Scout Leader also).

The first night will be a planning / information / learning night. We plan to get the Unit up and running quickly so that we can offer the 5th Mildura Scouts, who are ready to move onto Venturers, an option to stay part of the 5th Mildura Scout Group. Of course, we also welcome new Venturers who have not previously been in Scouting to join us.

The Venturer Unit program is based on 'Community Involvement', Personal Growth', 'Adventurous Activities' and 'Leadership Development'. Involvement in all of these areas, a bit of hard work (and a lot of fun) leads to the Scouting Movement's most prestigious award, the 'Queen's Scout Award'. We will be encouraging all Venturers to work towards this award.

We have been invited by the '2nd Mildura Venturer Unit' to join them on a Venturing Skills Camp on August 27 to 29. This is the first award in the Venturer Award Scheme, and the first step towards the Queen's Scout Award. I envisage our Venturer unit will also be involved in District Scouting events when invited.

We look forward to growing an active and dynamic Venturer Unit at the 5th Mildura Scout Group.

Steve's Hike Notes

Things to think about...

You are going on hike, but unlike any other type of camp, you need to carry everything, on your back. So here are some tips to make life a little easier.

Weight!
This is your biggest enemy, every single gram extra you carry is going to cause you the extra bit of pain! Weight everything, you'll be surprised! Aim for less than 10kg.
  1. Food -I know we don't all like the dehydrated foods, but carrying food that already contains water is pointless as you are also carrying water just to drink. Test and try different types BEFORE you go hiking.
  2. Drinks - OK so water is a little boring, don't go cordial or energy drinks. try a little powdered cordial or Tang! lt's light and slightly tasty.
  3. Share - As a group of 2-3 you can lighten each others load by sharing the tent, food and cooking gear.
  4. Too much junk - Before you put your gear into your pack, put it into a heap, step back and look. Is there anything you don't really need? QUESTIONS: Does that full towel need to go? How many clothes can you really wear? And where are you going to plug the hair dryer into??
  5. Plastic is wonderful. Why take metal knives and fork when you're not having steak? There is a good range of plastic gear these days. QUESTION: if you are not cutting anything, why do you need a knife anyway?
  6. Packaging - Food comes in a bag inside a box? Throw out the box before you leave.
Gear.
You don't have to own the latest and greatest to make it through.
  1. Rain coat - Now I know a big jacket is nice. but a poncho is much smaller and more practical. as it can also cover your pack. HINT: Pack a garbage bag or two. they are super light, and with a few holes cut make awesome poncho or bag cover!
  2. Cookers - Gas cookers are good. but they are HEAVYll However they can cook many meals are can be good if shared. Solid fuel stoves are very LIGHT but require a bit more patience.
  3. Sit-apon - OK I have borrowed this one from the Guides. Can't carry a chair while hiking. but don't want a wet behind when you sit? How about a square of plastic, like the type from around white goods?
  4. Foot wear - TIP: To help prevent blisters. wear 2 pairs of socks. 1 thin and 1 thick!!
  5. Don't forget some toilet paper!
  6. Sleeping - NEVER sleep in the clothes you have been walking in!
Navigation.
A Scout should make careful observations about the environment, so they have some idea where they are going.
  1. Sun on your back - make a mental note as to which side of you the sun is. and from that you should be able to make a rough guess as to the rough directions. NSEW.
  2. Eye contact - You should ALWAYS be within eyesight of someone else. Keep a watch on those in front and behind you.
  3. Lost - This is super important! If you do get lost and separated from the rest of the group STOP!! Do not keep walking!! Make some noise, but stay where you are. Hopefully this does not happen.
Environment.
The 10th Scout Law is ????
  1. Rubbish - Everything you bring in, you must bring out. So think about the meals you have to try and reduce the amount of weight you have to drag back out again.
  2. Lollies - Now this is one of the few camps where A FEW lollies are allowed for a little energy, HOWEVER don't buy lollies with wrappers. I know you Scouts are good and put them in your pockets. but after 10km of walking, they FALL OUT!!
  3. Cold? - Yes it will be cold. the best tips - Walking, wear layers, thin layers. As you walk you warm up take off a layer. If you wear one BIG layer you get hot and cold quickly. Bedtime: the new style sleeping bag (silky) actually work better with less layers. as they need body heat to reflect to keep warm. Layers of clothing block the body heat.
  4. Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but foot prints.
The number 1 rule!

NEVER LET YOUR MUM OR DAD PACK YOUR BAG!!

8th APR Scout Photo Contest 2010 - Our Jaimie is a Winner! CONGRATULATIONS

Scouts Australia is proud to announce that Jaimie Rodd has been awarded Bronze Prize in the 8th APR Scout Photo Contest for his photo "National Tree Day". Congratulations Jaimie!!!

The APR received a total of 125 entries for this year's contest. In March, a panel from a major photography club in the Philippines pre-selected the 15 best photos to be entered for the final selection. These photos were then forwarded to the Scout Association of Japan for final judging by a panel of renowned Japanese photographers headed by Mr Takeyoshi Tanuma, President of the Japan Professional Photographers Society.

Jaimie will receive the Bronze Prize trophy and an XBox courtesy of Mr Shinya Mizuta, Chairman of the APR Scouting Profile Sub-Committee. Jaimie's photo will be used in the Asia-Pacific Region's regular publications including promotional posters and the 2011 calendar.

Jaimie is a Crew Leader with Marcus Blount Rover Crew (2nd Mildura) and an Assistant Scout Leader with 5th Mildura. He is involved with Sunraysia Gang Show, and was an official JNN photographer at AJ2010, the 22nd Australian Jamboree. You can view more of Jaimie's work, including photos from AJ2010, on his official Facebook page.

Scouts Australia would also like to congratulate the other Australian entrants in the competition - we were greatly impressed by the quality of the photos submitted this year. Keep up the good work!

Help Needed Easter Saturday & Sunday @ Mildura 100 Ski Race!!!

Sunraysia District Scouts have been asked to assist with the Mildura 100 Ski Race Car Parking on Easter Saturday & Sunday.

This is a fundraiser for the District and we require 18 helpers each Shift to assist on each day, even if you can only make it for one shift that would be a great help!.

No special training is required, we just need people power on each day to assist directing cars, the Ski Club supply the rest!

I have set up the roster for each shift below, if you can assist please reply & add your name & home/mobile number to 1 or more of the shifts.

If you have any questions or would like any further information please email or call me on 0419 130 739.
